• 2011: Year Of The Cactus?

    Posted 2/3/2011 by cal
Not like we expect anything less, but Cactus Club just had a smokin’ hot two-week run of rock and roll shows, making the city forget that spring is still a long way off.  All three shows I saw there were cold nights packed full of people, even on a Tuesday!  How did this happen?  We know we can rely on a good beer selection, great service, perfect sound, and of course, a pool of local talent that keeps getting better all the time, often sending national-touring headliners away with their tails between their legs.

  • Milwaukee's Best 2010

    Posted 12/15/2010 by cal

After a 2009 lull, the Brew City stormed back this year with an astounding array of incredible records.  I decided I couldn’t extricate myself from my hometown bias, because I would put Milwaukee’s top ten records up against the rest of the world’s top ten without hesitation this year.  Credit local überproducer Shane Hochstetler in large part: he produced or co-produced six of the albums on this list and many more at his Howl Street Recordings, the new Midwestern music Mecca.  And wouldn't you know it?  His next door neighbor at Mystery Room Mastering and Recording, Justin Carl Perkins, had a hand in at least four of 'em as well.  And with the onslaught of online free/pay-what-you-want downloads (thanks, Radiohead!!), y’all have no excuse for not checking out at least half of this music (note: if the album title contains a link, it should take you to a download page).

As the consumer paradigm continues to shift away from albums, the line between LP and EP is beginning to blur, so I’m lumping them all together here.  A cohesive and moving collection of five tunes can be just as powerful a statement as an hour-long treatise, and it’s kind of the year of the EP in Milwaukee anyway.  And with the rest of the world going all 80s retro this year, MKE seems to be taking its cues from much further back in time (warning: three different Buddy Holly mentions.  Unavoidable), but making sounds uniquely modern.  This is one of those lists where I feel bad for all the records that aren’t number one, ‘cause they’re all so damn good.  Enjoy.

By all accounts, missing Monotonix when they come through town is a bad idea. I’ll say one thing: missing this particular show would’ve been--particularly due to three local bands that also played, not a stinker among ‘em. Read more... Comments (0)
  • Call Me Lightning: Frank's Power Plant, 3-13-09

There were at least three different Milwaukee shows I could’ve been happy checking out on this night. The Danglers were playing at Points East Pub, but what I’d heard from the headliners, Consider The Source, was pure soulless, proggy wankery, so I ruled that one out. Originally we were planning on seeing Masonry at the Cactus Club, a band I’d never seen but seemed promising. Then at the last minute, we decided instead to try Frank’s for a sure thing with Call Me Lightning. I’d just seen the band a couple weeks prior but it was difficult to fully enjoy as I could barely move and there were equipment problems; plus, I was eager to see CML play a full set, so off we went.

  • Jail's album release party at Y-Not III (spoiler: I didn't stay for the headliner...sorry)

I almost feel guilty even posting anything about this show (which is why it has taken me so long), but I feel like I ought to at least give a quick run-down of the two opening bands. Myspace said 8 p.m. showtime; I need to stop ever trusting anything about myspace. So after a couple hours of nursing beer and digesting a Turner fish fry as the joint steadily filled up, The Trusty Knife opened the show some time after ten. Read more... Comments (0)

I seriously struggle with the notion that I might be biased just because I live here, and then I go see Decibully play at the BBC and wonder how the hell this band is not playing auditoriums across the country. Read more... Comments (0)
