    I’m glad I’m not going to be at Cactus Club tonight.  When a band I love announces four days in advance that its next show will be its last, and it’ll be an opening set for that Alan Sparhawk side project band [NOTHING AGAINST RETRIBUTION GOSPEL CHOIR], I (apparently) feel somewhat relieved that I already have tickets to a different show.  It’s not even a band I like nearly as much as Celebrated Workingman, but it’s a good band that’s not about to end itself.  What, with a fill-in bassist [NOTHING AGAINST SCOTT SCHOENBECK] and who knows what kind of intra-band drama at the root of the breakup, is the likelihood that tonight will be the best show Celebrated Workingman ever plays?  Even if it is, I can’t live in that moment; it would only make the (let’s face it: not-so-)sudden demise of the band that much harder to take.  It’s hard enough from a distance.   • 2011: Year Of The Cactus?

    Not like we expect anything less, but Cactus Club just had a smokin’ hot two-week run of rock and roll shows, making the city forget that spring is still a long way off.  All three shows I saw there were cold nights packed full of people, even on a Tuesday!  How did this happen?  We know we can rely on a good beer selection, great service, perfect sound, and of course, a pool of local talent that keeps getting better all the time, often sending national-touring headliners away with their tails between their legs.

  • The You-Phoria Guide to Summerfest 2010

    Despite the general lameness of Summerfest’s big headliners (with one or two exceptions per year), the smaller stages in 2010 are looking hotter than any year in recent memory, especially considering the wealth of local talent spread all over the grounds.  When in doubt, sit at the Cascio Interstate Music Groove Stage (CIMGS) and marvel at all the amazing Milwaukee music you never realized was here.  There’s something worth fifteen bucks every single day this year, and usually multiple quality acts (and don’t forget, you can get in for eight bucks on weekdays between noon and four!).

  • The Best Shows Of 2008

    When I started brainstorming this list, I was thinking "who the heck did I even see this year besides SC3?" As it turns out, as I've perused the archives, that's due to the dominant awesomeness of SC3 and NOT the lack of good shows this year.     These days, I find myself feeling a tad chagrined that I’ve lived in Milwaukee for 12 years and I’m just starting to really pay attention to the music scene here. Sure, I’ve been a Willy Porter fan forever, used to catch lots of good shows at Linneman’s when I lived in Riverwest, and I kept up with all my friends’ bands back in college but they all eventually broke up and I got way too busy chasing around all kinds of national heartthrobs.
